FAQs
There are four main fuel types that boilers can use:
Gas (Natural Gas): The most common option in the UK. Homes with a gas boiler will have a gas meter, usually found near the property entrance or close to the electric meter.
Electric: Electric boilers run solely from your property’s electricity supply, so you’ll only have one meter in the home.
LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas): Common in rural homes and caravan parks, LPG systems use either a large refillable tank or two red cylinders that need replacing when empty.
Oil: Frequently used in countryside properties without mains gas. These boilers require an external oil tank, normally located in the garden or near the driveway.
There are three main types of boiler systems available:
Combi Boilers
A combi (combination) boiler is the most common type found in UK homes. It’s a single wall-mounted unit that provides both central heating and hot water directly from the boiler, so there’s no need for extra tanks or cylinders.Conventional Boilers
Sometimes called “regular” or “traditional” boilers, these systems include a boiler, a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard or occasionally the loft), and header tanks that are typically located in the loft space.System Boilers
A system boiler is a sealed, pressurised unit that works with a separate hot water cylinder. The cylinder is normally kept in an airing cupboard or sometimes in the garage.
It’s also possible to switch from one type of boiler system to another — for example, upgrading from a combi to a conventional system, or vice versa — depending on your property and heating needs.
All modern boiler systems are fitted with a flue, which can be positioned in one of two ways:
Horizontal flue – exits through the wall at the side of your property.
Vertical flue – exits through the roof of your property.
Please note: if your boiler has a vertical flue, the installation price shown on our website may vary, as extra work is required to fit and seal the flue correctly.
The right boiler size for your home largely depends on the number of bathrooms and showers you have. As a guide:
For a property with 1 shower, we usually recommend a 28–30kW boiler.
For homes with 2–3 showers, a larger 40kW boiler is more suitable.
For properties with more than 3 bathrooms, it’s best to speak with our team so we can advise on the most efficient system for your needs.
The kind of property you live in can influence which boiler systems are suitable. For example, a terrace house or flat may have different installation considerations compared to a semi-detached, detached, or bungalow. Key factors such as the location of your flue, gas meter, and drainage all play an important role in deciding the best boiler setup.
Yes, it’s possible to relocate a boiler, but it can affect the overall installation cost and requirements. Moving a boiler often involves extra work such as extending pipework, rerouting the flue, and adjusting connections for gas, water, and electrics. If you’re considering a new location, our team can advise on the most practical and cost-effective options for your property.
