Why does my pressure keep dropping on my boiler?

If you are finding you have to top up your boiler pressure more regularly than normal there could be a number of reasons for this. Here we will explain the reasons and how you can top your pressure on your boiler if you are unsure.

Most people only top up their pressure once or twice a year, sometimes it can be more but if you find yourself topping up your pressure monthly, weekly or daily then there may be a problem with your boiler or heating system.

Your central heating could be dropping pressure for a number of reasons:

Leaks within your system:

We advise you to go around your home and check for any visible signs of water leaks in the pipes, radiator valves and from the boiler. Always keep your eyes peeled for drips or water marks around your home as this could stop large water damage

Bleeding your radiators:

If recently, you have had to bleed your radiators to remove air, this can cause the pressure to be lowered within your heating system.

Expansion Vessel:

You could be experiencing pressure drops. It could be that your expansion vessel is full of water, its job within your boiler is to absorb the expansion of water as your boiler heats up. If it is faulty it may need replacing by a qualified engineer.

Faulty pressure gauge:

This gauge could be faulty causing the pressure to be read incorrectly. It is best to get this checked by a qualified heating engineer.

Faulty PRV or Expansion vessel:

These parts are inside the boiler and can fail over time causing fluctuations or regular pressure loss.

What should I do if my boiler is losing pressure?

Once you notice you have a problem either with your pressure, boiler or your central heating which has made your pressure go down, you should contact a qualified heating engineer who will be able to identify and solve your problem. It is best to not attempt any sort of repairs on your own as this may make the problems worse or could lead to injury. Always ask a qualified engineer to attend and repair any problems.
